Episode # 294 – “Even if disaster happens, we should be steadfast in our Dharma” – Yudishtra advises Arjuna!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed an important lesson from Yudishtra’s conversation with Sage Vyaasa. As Sage Vyaasa cautions Yudishtra about the thirteen-year disaster that is about to come shortly, he also advises Yudishtra not to deviate from the path of “Dharma”. Sage Vyaasa moreover cautions Yudishtra that there would be situations which might tempt him to deviate and take “shortcuts”, but he should be steadfast and follow the “Dharma” textbook word after word without a single deviation here and there. Also, Sage Vyaasa finally cheers up Yudishtra, he explains how the divine hand will always protect him at all times, even though many things might be going on around him. He explains that one night Yudishtra would have an immense dream of Bhagawan Shiva performing the “Rudra-Thaandava” (Cosmic Dance) and this is the indication that things are going to start. As the disaster happens, Yudishtra would be protected by a divine hand in the form of Bhagawan Krishna (Bhagawan Vishnu) at all times, if he follows the path of “Dharma” meticulously. After the disaster comes to an end, Yudishtra would finally emerge successful and unscathed.

With this small piece of advice, Sage Vyaasa hurries out of Indraprastha, and it is at this time, Yudishtra takes a series of “Shabadhams” in front of his brothers. We’ve already witnessed earlier that Yudishtra explains all whatever Sage Vyaasa told him. Now as Yudishtra finishes his accord, Arjuna expresses his viewpoints. Readers should read this very carefully, and this is going to be very interesting for all of us. As Yudishtra explains his stance and his “Shabadhams”, Arjuna wasn’t very convinced. Arjuna replies to Yudishtra thus: “Oh Yudishtra! Whatever Sage Vyaasa has said till now is going to happen anyway. He is a person who knows all the three things – Present, Past and Future. If he says that we’ve to undergo a disaster, there is no second thought about it. However, why should we take such a tough stance and force ourselves out of our normal? What is the use of being true to those people who are trying to ditch us? Why should we unnecessarily undergo suffering just on the pretext of “Dharma”, if the disaster and destruction is anyway going to happen? If the disaster would be avoided by our “Dharma”, then it’s fine! But if whatever we’re going to do is not going to make any difference, what is the purpose of forcing sufferings upon us?”

This is a valid question isn’t it? Arjuna’s point was very simple and clear – Anyways, whatever is going to happen is something that nobody can change. Hence for this, why should we change ourselves and why should we be true to those who aren’t? This is something that all of us would have in our mind as well – Anyways, there might be some problems coming irrespective of whether we’re doing our regular prayers or not. Hence, we might come to the conclusion as to why at all should we do prayers then? For this, Yudishtra is going to give an important reply here as part of this conversation. Yudishtra replies thus, “Oh Arjuna! I never said that Sage Vyaasa’s words were wrong. Whatever Sage Vyaasa said, would definitely happen and come true. I do not have any objection with that!” Arjuna replies back thus, “Fine! I too accept that Sage Vyaasa is right. But what is the use of being truthful here? Why should we be true to people who are going to create the disaster? Won’t people take us for a ride?”

For this, Yudishtra gives an important reply thus, “Oh Arjuna! This is where we’ve to be careful – No matter whatever happens and whoever does anything, I would not deviate from my “Dharma”! I would be steadfast in following my “Dharma” as per Bhagawan’s wish!” This is where, we’ve to focus ourselves upon. For instance, in our previous “Shri Vishnu Puraana” project, we’ve seen Sage Paraashara listing out various features of the current “Kali Yuga”. I shall try and recollect a few points which we’ve discussed earlier – Sage Paraashara explains how in the Kali Yuga, devotion towards Bhagawan would drastically reduce, how people would be becoming atheists, how people would not follow any norms in marrying each other, people who are learned and scholarly would never have any respect in this world, people who have the strength of argument and physical strength would be those would dominate, money, name and fame would be the three things behind which people will run – The list goes on and on! Given that Sage Paraashara’s words are always going to be true, we would immediately think, why at all should we develop Bhakti and Sharanagathi? What is the use of doing all this? If “Kali Yuga” is going to be in a certain fashion, shouldn’t we adjust ourselves and live according to the norms of the “Kali Yuga”? If I’ve to do this, what should I do? I’ve got to go and bang two people and come! Can I do this?

The answer should be “No”! Whatever is our “Dharma”, we should try and stand by it. Irrespective of many people around us being atheists and making fun of us, we should continue developing our Bhakti and Sharanaagathi towards Bhagawan. Let a thousand people tell a thousand things – The real test here for all of us that, whether we’re getting carried away by the words of these thousand people, or, are we steadfast and focused on what “Dharma” we should follow! This is exactly what Yudishtra is doing here as well – His stance is very simple – Let a thousand people create havoc. Let Sage Vyaasa’s words come true, which anyway is going to happen. But for all these, he is never going to change his stance and deviate from the path of “Dharma”! So for today, let us ask this question to ourselves and ponder – Are we following our “Dharma” every day irrespective of a thousand people trying to influence us in various ways? We shall continue this important discussion in the next episode as well! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 293 – “NEVER compromise your “Dharma” even when you face suffering” – Sage Vyasa advises Yudishtra!!!

In the previous episode we had witnessed an important offshoot discussion on whether “Parihaaras” suggested by a few astrologers would really work in solving one’s suffering or not. This is an important question that many of us might have in our minds as well. We understood yesterday that all the sufferings that we undergo in our everyday life are due to our past “Karma”. We’ve to have the maturity to accept this harsh reality, irrespective of whether we like it or not. Hence, if this is the case, it is better to burn our “Karma” by experiencing whatever we’re going through, rather than searching for “shortcuts” to escape from the problem. We’ve to understand two important things here – Firstly, everyone in this world has his / her own problems in life. There can never be even a single individual in this world (including animals and plants) who do not have problems. Hence, if we’re going to get scared of problems or feel jealous about others being happy at any point in time, it is in our own peril that we’re doing it. Secondly, only if we go through problems in our life, we would get to understand how to handle various tough situations as and when they come. If we experience only happiness and no sadness at all in life, we would get bored of life at one stage. It is like eating only sweets and nothing spicy and salty for our food requirements. Just because we might like a certain sweet, would we keep eating it three times a day? Similarly, just because we want to be happy, can we be happy 24*7? We’ve to think about it.

Secondly, after reading yesterday’s episode, a few readers might have come to the conclusion that I’m someone who doesn’t believe in Astrology. It is not the case. Astrology (“Jyotisha Shaastra”) is a huge science and is part of the Vedas. Hence, there is no question here whether we believe in Jyotisha Shaastra or not. The question is only the applicability part of it. We should understand that our various planetary positions that we go through in our lives are a result of our “Karma”, and if we have to undergo a bad patch, it is better to go through it silently, rather than making a hue and cry out of it. Thus, Astrology is very much true and it makes a lot of sense, but the point here is that, instead of running back and forth for “Parihaaras”, we should spend that time in performing “Dharma-Kaarya” and develop our Bhakti towards Bhagawan. If Bhagawan is by our side, who else is required to save us from any suffering? We should develop this mindset and attitude as we move on.

Coming back to the context thus, Yudishtra takes a few “Shabadhams” (Resolves) that from that day onwards, he wouldn’t speak anything against anyone or hurt anyone consciously and so on. As Yudishtra takes these resolutions, he requests his brothers to follow his path as well, so that all the five of them would be able to avoid any mishaps that might come consciously. Thus, as Sage Vyaasa says thus, he leaves immediately from Yudishtra’s chamber, however, before leaving he stopped for a few seconds and resumed the conversation thus: “Oh Yudishtra! Whatever I’ve told you, will come true some day. As you are in deep sleep one night, you would be able to see Bhagawan Rudra (Bhagawan Shiva) in your dream, performing the great “Rudra-Thaandavam” (The famous Cosmic Dance of Bhagawan Shiva at Kailasha). The moment you see that auspicious dance, please understand that all the “Adharma” in this world is going to come to an end very soon. All the Kshatrya kings and princes on both camps would face a huge disaster. It would be due to Bhagawan Shiva’s “Rudra-Thaandavam” at Kailaasha Giri, aided and executed by Bhagawan Krishna in this world. You cannot stop it from happening!”

Saying thus, Sage Vyaasa hurries out, and Yudishtra stops him for a moment and asks thus: “Oh Sage Vyaasa! May I know where are you going from here so quickly? If I need any help or clarification, I would like to reach you!” Sage Vyaasa quickly replies as he was proceeding: “Till now I’ve been telling about the Kailaasha Giri of Bhagawan Shiva isn’t it? I’m going to the same Kailaasha Giri only! The moment you think about me, I shall appear in front of you immediately! Please do not worry! However, you should also do one more thing – You should keep administering the kingdom without letting anyone know the details of the conversation that we’ve had just now. You should never show your shock or emotions to your people around and it might create tension and uneasiness amongst them. This would hamper your “Dharma-Raajya” at Indraprastha! Hence, continue doing what you’re doing best. Things will automatically take course at the right time! At the end, you would definitely emerge successful because of the “Dharma” that you’re going to execute. You would get due protection from an important source at the right time!”

Assuring thus, Sage Vyaasa leaves Indraprastha and it is only after this, Yudishtra takes the resolve that he would not deviate from the path of “Dharma” for the next thirteen years. So what do we understand from this section of the conversation? Many of us might start faltering on our “Dharma” if we know in advance that we’re in for some suffering! For instance, the moment we start facing a problem, we would immediately stop performing even our regular “Sandhyavandanam” and our routine prayers! This is what we shouldn’t do and if we do, it simply means that we’re giving into the problem by compromising our “Dharma”. This is exactly what Sage Vyaasa is advising Yudishtra here – Never ever leave your basic “Dharma” just because you’re going to face problems in the future. We should continue following the path of “Dharma” each and every day, irrespective of whether we’re enjoying happiness or facing suffering. This is the important lesson that all of us have to learn from this section of the conversation. So for today, let us understand this point very clearly and let us try consciously to implement it in our daily lives. We shall wait till the next episode to continue this discussion further! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 292 – Do “PARIHARAS” work to solve one’s suffering? A discussion!!!

We’re at an important juncture wherein Yudishtra has been warned by Sage Vyaasa about a huge thirteen-year hurdle and eventually a mass destruction that is going to come along with it. As Yudishtra comes to know of it, he thinks about it in depth and with this, he decides to take a few pledges (“Shabadham”) in front of his brothers in his grand courtroom. Readers should understand one important point here – Instead of buckling down under pressure owing to these stunning words from Sage Vyaasa, Yudishtra was thoughtful in the sense that how can he overcome the problem by following “Dharma” at any cost. This is the gross difference between Yudishtra and us in today’s scenario. For instance, if we undergo some problematic situations in our lives, how do we react? We immediately run to an astrologer to check out what “Parihaara” should be done to overcome this problem, isn’t it? First of all, “Parihaara” doesn’t exist in the science of Astrology at all. I’ve mentioned this in an earlier context as well. Thus, instead of asking for a “Parihaara” to Sage Vyaasa, Yudishtra goes ahead in facing the problem that is about to come, and that too with the methodology of “Dharma”. This is what we call “honesty” and “sincerity” towards himself and his people.

As we witness this bold step from Yudishtra, one important thing that we should learn here is that, whatever problem might come, we should be ready to face it and fight it out, rather than looking at ways and means to escape from the problem. Now let us discuss in today’s episode as to why I am saying that “Parihaara” doesn’t exist. Basically this term called “Parihaara” started to be in use amongst astrologers who are greedy for money and who want to make use of people’s problems to make their living. We should imagine one thing here – Rather than asking us to go to a temple and light four or five lamps for a particular deity, if an astrologer says, “From tomorrow onwards make sure that you follow the path according to “Dharma”, by not hurting anyone, by not scolding or abusing anyone, etc.”, will we even go to that astrologer again? What would we tell him in reply? We immediately would tell him: “Please do not advise me on things that I cannot do. Please advise me on some “Parihaara” to get a “quick relief” from the hardship or a bad time period!” This is because following the path of “Dharma” during testing times is not an easy joke! We’re going to witness how Yudishtra suffered and suffered by following the path of “Dharma” at all times. Yet, what is important here is that, by walking the treacherous path of “Dharma”, Yudishtra and Co. earned Bhagawan Krishna’s divine “Anugraha” at all times, isn’t it? At every instance of testing times, Bhagawan Krishna was there with the Paandava brothers to ensure that their sufferings are eased out, isn’t it? This is the important point here – If we are sincere to ourselves and to others around us, surely Bhagawan would be by our side and He would ensure that these hardships are waived off at the appropriate time and no danger would surround us at any point in time. It is the faith that is important for all of us to have.

For this, we might ask a counter question thus: “Oh! If that is the case, should we keep suffering and suffering all the time on the pretext of “Dharma”? Duryodhana was enjoying all his life and it is only towards the end that he had to perish, isn’t it? But till his last day, Duryodhana did not undergo any such seemingly tough suffering, was he? Whereas on the other hand, Yudishtra was following each and every step as per the “Dharma” textbook meticulously and he ended up spending twelve years in the forest without food and shelter. Subsequently he had to spend one year of disguised life without falling in anybody’s eyes and even then Yudishtra was projected to be guilty of cheating the rules of the “Agnyaata-Vaasa” by Duryodhana and Co. If such is the scale of suffering by following “Dharma”, is it really worth it? Anyways, everybody is going to die on a certain day, isn’t it? Yet, why should we take the tougher path, if there’s an easier option available?”

I’m sure all of us would have this question deep within us. Maybe we might be scared to ask such a question openly, but I’m sure each and everyone of us would have thought about it at some point in time, especially when we are suffering. The answer is very simple here – We should first understand that all our suffering is because of our previous “Karma” that we’ve performed either during this birth or during our previous births. I’ve already explained in detail about the “Sanchita Karma” and the “Praarabdha Karma” earlier. Thus, our present-day life during this present birth is solely based upon both our “Sanchita Karma” and our “Praarabdha Karma”, and whenever the appropriate planetary positions in our horoscope arrive, we would automatically experience the results of whatever “Karma” we’ve committed. If such is the case, where does the concept called “Parihaara” come from and how can a “Parihaara” dissolve our “Karma” just like that? If such a thing is true, do we see all people who do Parihaara after Parihaara all throughout their lives living happily? The answer is a big “NO”! None of those who do such stupid things have ever been successful in life! By doing such things, we are only trying to escape from our problem, and it only shows our cowardice in facing the problem head on!

So now, the question comes – If such is the case, why are a few astrologers prescribing such useless “Parihaaras” to us? The answer is very simple – These astrologers simply want to make money by “fooling” us and by taking advantage of our problematic situations in life. We should first understand that there is nobody in this world who does not have problems and suffering. In fact, even Bhagawan Himself wasn’t an exception here – We’ve witnessed how Bhagawan Rama suffered for fourteen years in the forest, along with Mother Sita and Lakshmana. We’re witnessing how Bhagawan Krishna Himself suffered all through His divine incarnation until the last minute. If such is the case, why should we feel scared of problems? Thus, the point here is that, instead of wasting our time and money in running behind greedy astrologers like these, we should prepare ourselves to face the problem head on and emerge victorious. By doing so, we’ve to also ensure that we’ve to develop Bhakti and complete surrender (“Sharanaagathi”) towards Bhagawan. If Bhagawan’s “Anugraha” is with us, why at all should we depend on these fools? Are these astrologers equal to Bhagawan? No way, isn’t it? Hence, our trust should be on Bhagawan and not on these opportunistic people who are waiting to prey on our suffering.

So for today, let us understand this important lesson from Yudishtra on how he’s preparing himself to face the tough situation head-on, instead of running away from it! We shall continue this important discussion in the next episode as well! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 291 – Yudishtra’s pledge – “I would NEVER deviate from ‘Dharma’ for the next thirteen years”!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed a very important concept and a message that is prominent in our “Sanaatana Dharma” literature with regards to the role of an “Aachaarya” or a Guru (Spiritual Master). The primary role of the Guru is to enlighten the disciple with a holistic picture of the entire happenings around with certain important guidelines as to how to handle them. It is up to the disciple to grasp the apt meaning of what the Guru says and implement the guidelines as per the words of the Guru. We’re not someone to go and ask unwanted questions as to why is the Guru asking us to do some specific things. Our job is only to obey and do whatever the Guru says. This is exactly what Sage Vyaasa is also explaining here. As he enters into Indraprastha, he warns Yudishtra of a potential thirteen-year disaster in the near future, gives an indication that Yudishtra would be the sole person who would be responsible for all the mess that’s going to unfold and walks away immediately without standing there even for a moment!

At this point, we might wonder one more thing – If we would have been in Yudishtra’s position, what would we have done? We would have immediately asked Sage Vyaasa back thus: “Oh Sage! What is that problem which is going to create a mess? Why should I be a reason for all of it? If given an opportunity, how can I ensure that such a problem doesn’t happen? How can I avoid it?” It should be noted here that Yudishtra did not ask even a single question like these to Sage Vyaasa. He did not open his mouth at all, and as Sage Vyaasa left Indraprastha, he quietly did all the respects to him and sent him off peacefully without creating any sort of a tussle. Yesterday, we’ve witnessed why Mahatmas or great Gurus do not disclose things completely to us, and today we’re witnessing how a disciple should behave to the Guru. If a Guru is telling something, a disciple should never back-answer or ask counter-questions to him / her. The role of the disciple is only to listen to the Guru, absorb and understand what the Guru says and act accordingly without speaking a word back! This is exactly what Yudishtra does here – He doesn’t speak a word to Sage Vyaasa and sends him off with all due respects! After Sage Vyaasa leaves Indraprastha, Yudishtra sits calmly for sometime and ponders over what he just said. He was thinking within himself as to how to avoid such problems arising in future with all the principles of “Dharma” that he is aware of. He was thinking of ways to avoid a huge war of disaster as per “Dharma”. Thus, Yudishtra’s thought process was very simple here – Follow “Dharma” at every instance and situation, and this “Dharma” will protect him at all times and would avoid all the problems from arising!

With this thought process running in his mind, Yudishtra quickly calls upon all his four brothers to his side for a meeting. As all of them assemble thus, Yudishtra briefs them about Sage Vyaasa’s visit and his stern words. With this, Yudishtra also explains his stance to the Paandava brothers thus, “Oh brothers! Given Sage Vyaasa’s grave warning for the future to come, it is extremely necessary that all of us have to stick to the path of “Dharma” at all times, even when the situation compels us to deviate from this path. This is going to be an “acid test” for all of us whether we’re on the side of “Dharma” or not. If we follow the path of “Dharma”, many problems can be avoided. If at all any problem arises, we would be able to handle and mitigate it with a clear direction. In this regard, I’m hereby going to take a few important pledges in front of all of you – From today onwards for the next thirteen years, I would not say anything that hurts others. My words will be in such a way that others would feel pleased to listen. I shall not hurt anyone with my words. Secondly, for the next thirteen years, I shall not lie to anyone even for a small thing. Of course throughout my life I’ve been that way only, but for the next thirteen years, I’m going to meticulously follow this principle of truth at all times and with all people. Thirdly, I’m going to get along well with friends and family members without any hiccups. I shall not scold anyone for anything! Oh brothers! I request all of you to follow this path for the next thirteen years as we’re going to pass through a rough patch in our lives. If we follow the path of “Dharma” properly in this way, I’m sure we would be able to emerge successful! Moreover, if we’re sincere, Bhagawan Himself would assist us in our pursuit and He would ensure that we wouldn’t fall into any trap!”

We shall witness how Yudishtra is straightforward and sincere to himself and to others as well. This is an important lesson for all of us for our daily lives too. We shall have a detailed discussion on Yudishtra’s pledges and how these are applicable to us as well in the next episode! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 290 – A Guru only signals a “HOLISTIC VIEW” of a problem in front of us – Why?

In the previous episode, we had witnessed Sage Vyaasa thundering to Yudishtra that there is going to be a huge disaster, which is going to span for the next thirteen years, and that, Yudishtra is the sole person who is going to be responsible for all what is going to happen henceforth. As Sage Vyaasa thunders thus, he quickly leaves the place in a hurry! It seemed as if Sage Vyaasa had exclusively come to Indraprastha to signal a grave warning to Yudishtra and Co. As Sage Vyaasa left Indraprastha thus, Yudishtra could not understand what was going on and what was conspiring behind the scenes. Readers should remember that this is precisely the same time when Duryodhana also was there at Indraprastha after the Raaja-Suya Yaaga to have a look at the magnificent palace there. During yesterday’s episode, we had also decoded what Sage Vyaasa meant by the two sentences that he uttered. The thirteen-year-period was none other than the upcoming twelve-year “Vana-Vaasa” plus one year of “Agnyaatha Vaasa”, post the gambling fiasco. Moreover, the mass destruction that he meant, signifies the Kurukshetra war that was about to happen at the end of the thirteenth year. All of us know what happened in that.

As we’re discussing this segment, we might have two questions within us – Why is Sage Vyaasa “indirectly” hinting about some future happenings everytime and not telling things directly on the face? Secondly, why should Yudishtra take all the blame on himself inspite of Duryodhana being the hub for all “Adharma” that is going to unfold, including Draupati’s “Vastra-Apaharanam”? What was Yudishtra’s fault here? He is an epitome of “Dharma” isn’t it? If that’s the case, why should Yudishtra take the blame for all that is happening? We shall discuss the answers for these two queries today. The first question that we’ve to see an answer is why Sage Vyaasa indirectly warns Yudishtra everytime to be careful and not directly on his face. In fact, we’ve witnessed this same sort of approach followed by Sage Vyaasa earlier as well. Readers might remember that during the first “Vana-Vaasa” of the Paandava brothers after the “Laaksha Griha” fiasco, Sage Vyaasa met them multiple times in the forest. During every meeting, Sage Vyaasa gives out signals – For instance, it was Sage Vyaasa who had hinted Yudishtra and Co. to proceed towards Drupada Desha and to participate in Draupati’s Svayamvara. He indirectly explained who Draupati was and how she has obtained a boon to marry five husbands! Although he mentioned “five husbands”, he never mentioned that these five people are going to be none other than the five Paandava brothers! Sage Vyaasa stopped short of revealing more on this, which, eventually the Paandavas themselves found out as time progressed. Readers might remember all of these instances, and if required, readers can browse through our previous episodes for a quick recollection.

The reason why Sage Vyaasa does so is very simple – Normally great Sages and “Mahatmas” would never give their disciples the full picture of anything that they teach us. They would only give an overall input and with this, we’ve to apply that input in our lives to find out things for ourselves. Even today’s education system does the same isn’t it? For instance, if we learn Mathematics or Physics or any course in Commerce, Accounting or even Management too, the teacher / professor would only teach the overall concept / subject and would leave the application part for us to solve and check, isn’t it? It is we who’ve to take the step forward in proactively solving problems pertaining to the concept and see the applicability of the concepts in real-life problems. This is how we learn. Not everything can be taught by the teacher inside the four walls of the classroom. This is why, in today’s academic domain, “Self-learning” occupies a paramount position in the “Learning curve” of a student at any level – Be it in school or a university. Thus, this is exactly what Sage Vyaasa does here too – He only gives the overall concept that there is going to be a great disaster in the making for the next thirteen years. Now, it is for Yudishtra to apply all his learnings that he had gained over the past so many years pertaining to “Dharma” and come out of the disaster without getting trapped into it. The Guru would not interfere and “micromanage” things everytime. He / She would only give the big picture and it is up to us to take lessons from that and lead our lives accordingly. This is my take on the first question that we’ve raised.

The second question is a bit complicated here – Why is Yudishtra being held responsible for anything and everything that is happening around and why not Duryodhana, inspite of being the sole reason for the entire disaster to happen? This is where we also tend to lose hope on “Dharma” at times – We might easily be tempted to think that Duryodhana is walking freely without being held responsible for all what he did, but Yudishtra is being held responsible here, even if he is an epitome of “Dharma”! Hence, we might think, why should we at all follow “Dharma” in that case isn’t it? Yudishtra followed the path of “Dharma” and had to undergo all the sufferings possible, however, Duryodhana followed “Adharma” every minute, and yet, he enjoyed his life all through, except for the last day! There is an important answer for this, and we shall wait till the next episode to find out the same! Stay tuned for an interesting accord! 🙂

Episode # 289 – “It’s going to be a THIRTEEN-YEAR disaster” – Sage Vyasa thunders to Yudishtra!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed Sage Vyaasa giving an entry into Indraprastha, days after the Raaja-Suya Yaaga was completed. With this, we’ve entered into the all-important “Dyuta-Parva” which serves as a huge turning point in the entire Mahabharata story. We shall experience each event described in the “Dyuta Parva” in detail from now onwards. As Sage Vyaasa entered inside, he saw Yudishtra with a worried look and asked him the reason for his worry. Yudishtra in return expressed his concern about Sishupala’s death right in front of everyone and was it an indication that something bad is going to happen in the kingdom. Yudishtra was both concerned as well as afraid – Not for himself, but for his people and for the kingdom’s welfare. He was a selfless and a righteous king, who was willing to take up any sort of suffering, if it is for the benefit of the people around him. As we’ve witnessed earlier as well, Yudishtra being an embodiment of “Dharma” himself, wouldn’t be afraid to take up any suffering for himself at any point in time. We’ve also seen how the Paandavas have already had a round of “Vana-Vaasa” before their marriage with Draupati. However, if Yudishtra is feeling scared of something, there should be some background to it. Now let us witness what Sage Vyaasa replied to Yudishtra’s concern.

As Yudishtra asked his concern in as many as 9-10 slokas, Sage Vyaasa’s reply was a stunning one and in just one sloka! He says thus, “Oh Yudishtra! Yes! You’re right! This is a signal of a huge danger that is going to arrive! This danger is not an ordinary one, but is going to last for a period of thirteen years from now! Moreover, you are going to be the reason behind the mass destruction of lakhs and lakhs of great Kshatrya warriors that this world has seen!” Sage Vyaasa stops with this and he quickly walks out of the palace! This left Yudishtra stunned beyond words! He did not expect such a short and crisp answer from Sage Vyaasa. Moreover, Yudishtra felt that probably he shouldn’t have asked such a question to him in the first place!

Now let us decode what Sage Vyaasa had just said – Firstly he says that this danger is going to be for thirteen years. This means that Yudishtra is going to lose his kingdom of Indraprastha very soon and is going to go for another round of “Vana-Vaasa” for the next twelve years. Subsequently, the thirteenth year is going to be the “Agnyaatha-Vaasam” wherein they should live in such a way that they are not seen by any of Duryodhana’s people. This is one part of Sage Vyaasa’s words. Now the second part – All the Kshatriya warriors in this world are going to be destroyed and Yudishtra is going to be the sole reason for this mass destruction. Subsequently after the thirteenth year, the Kurukhsetra war is going to happen and in that war, both the Paandavas’ and the Kauravas’ armies are going to be totally destroyed. The reminiscence of the war is only going to be a bunch of ten people! That’s it! Moreover, for all this destruction, Yudishtra is going to be the sole reason for it. We might be wondering how! It is only because Yudishtra is going to participate in the upcoming gambling game, all this destruction is going to happen.

We should imagine here – If Yudishtra would have said “No” to Duryodhana for the gambling game, what would have happened? Everything would have been as normal as it was at that moment. Perhaps, maybe Duryodhana would have tried fighting a war with Yudishtra and Co. on a much smaller scale, and he could have been easily handled by Bheemasena and Arjuna. Or, maybe Duryodhana would have kept on humiliating Yudishtra, which would have resulted in a “war of words” and things could have been this way without any physical damage. Or maybe, if nothing would have conspired for Duryodhana and Co. over a period of time, he himself would have mended his ways eventually and he would have ruled Hastinapura after King Dhridiraashtra’s time. Yudishtra could have also continued ruling Indraprastha for a long time as well. However, it was only because Yudishtra had accepted the gamble, did all the things go awry.

So for today, let us understand up to this point and we shall witness the continuation of how Yudishtra reacted to Sage Vyaasa’s words in the next episode! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 288 – Commencing the “Dyuta-Parva” – Sage Vyasa’s “surprise visit” to Yudishtra’s Indraprastha!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed Duryodhana going around the Indraprastha palace with awe and jealousy. He was utterly amazed with the construction and the intricacies of the work. At the same time, jealousy and frustration started to burn within him with a huge flame, which started turning things around. At one point when Duryodhana took a wrong step and fell on the floor of water, Draupati happened to come that way accidentally and upon seeing Duryodhana’s plight, laughed at him for his ignorance! This infuriated him even more and unable to bear the shame and insult, Duryodhana walked off angrily and decided to go back to Hastinapura immediately. With this, we gradually make an entry into the most important “Parva” of the entire Mahabharata story called “Dyuta Parva”. In this episode, we shall see a glimpse of what is explained in the “Dyuta Parva” as we move on further.

As we’ve witnessed yesterday, “Dyuta” means “Gambling”. Thus, this is the Parva that talks in detail about the gambling game that took place between the Paandava brothers and the Kauravas. Duryodhana somehow convinces King Dhridiraashtra to permit him to gamble with Yudishtra, with a whole lot of reasons. Initially, he tried to furiously convince King Dhridiraashtra for the game, but King Dhridiraashtra did not give his approval. Finally, with the help of Duryodhana’s uncle, Sahuni, a detailed master-plan was created and with this, a plan was also made to convince King Dhridiraashtra by “emotionally” attacking him. Sahuni played a crucial role in the entire planning process and with this, King Dhridiraashtra was made to give an approval for the gambling game as a “friendly game” between the two camps. As King Dhridiraashtra gave the “go-ahead”, little did he know that Duryodhana was planning a huge conspiracy behind this whole event.

Thus, the gambling game was decided and people were called for. As the game progressed, Sahuni was playing the “masterstroke” game and as all of us know, made Duryodhana victorious in each and every move. With every move going against Yudishtra, he started losing all his properties, horses, elephants, army, and finally the entire Indraprastha kingdom to Duryodhana. The game proceeded even to an extent wherein Yudishtra was forced to stake his other four Paandava brothers and play. He succumbed to the pressure and eventually lost all his brothers to Duryodhana! Now with nothing else to stake and play, Duryodhana wanted Yudishtra to stake Draupati and continue the game! Even though Yudishtra wasn’t in favour of it, he had no other option but to go for it! Finally, Yudishtra ended up losing Draupati as well, and with this, Duchaasana dragged her out of her chamber and committed the most heinous crime of pulling off her saree in public. With nobody to help her, Draupati cried to Bhagawan Krishna desperately for help and with this, Bhagawan Krishna inivisibly made His divine presence by limitlessly extending her saree around her. Thus, Draupati’s chastity was protected by Bhagawan Krishna at a crucial time. Thus, all these details are explained bit by bit in the “Dyuta Parva”, which we’re going to commence shortly. We shall also witness all the events that unfolded in great detail as much as possible.

Moving on thus, the “Dyutha Parva” commences with a surprise visit of Sage Vyaasa to Indraprastha. Now that all the events pertaining to the Raaja-Suya Yaaga are over, Indraprastha kingdom comes back to normalcy and Yudishtra continues with all his administrative duties of the kingdom. One fine day, Sage Veda-Vyaasa decides that it is time for him to meet Yudishtra one-on-one and convey certain important matters to him. Thus, with all his disciples surrounding him, Sage Vyaasa makes his way to Indraprastha. It is to be noted by readers here that when Sage Vyaasa had come to Indraprastha, Duryodhana and Co. were still there along with Yudishtra and it was the time when Duryodhana decided to stay back at Indraprastha for a few more days before leaving back to Hastinapura. Thus, as Sage Vyaasa makes his way into the palace, Yudishtra goes and welcomes him with all the due respects and makes him comfortable. As Sage Vyaasa settles down thus, he sees Yudishtra to be a bit worried about something. He enquires with Yudishtra thus, “Oh Yudishtra! You seem to be worried about something. What’s going on? Is everything fine? I saw that the Raaja-Suya-Yaaga had also taken place with a lot of grandeur and everyone were happy about it. Inspite of that, what makes you show a worried face to me?”

As Sage Vyaasa asks thus, Yudishtra replies back: “Oh great Sage! Everything went on well, thanks to Bhagawan Krishna’s divine Anugraha! But there’s something in my heart that is constantly pricking me. As the Yaaga was happening, Sishupaala was killed in this very place on the spot by Bhagawan Krishna. There was a point when Sishupaala was constantly ranting about Bhagawan Krishna in the public, which infuriated Bhagawan Krishna. This made Him kill Sishupaala with His “Chakra-Aayudha” then and there! I’m concerned whether this was a bad omen. During an auspicious Yaaga, if someone is getting killed, doesn’t it show some bad signs for something huge to come by? Is it a signal for a disaster to happen at Indraprastha? Will it affect the kingdom in a bad way? I’ve heard from Sage Naarada that three types of dangers might arise – One from the Svarga Lokha, the other from the Aakaasha and the other from the earth. Now which of the three is going to happen? I’m totally confused and concerned about this!”

As Yudishtra expressed his concerns to Sage Vyaasa thus, he awaits a reply from the great Sage on this. So for today, let us understand up to this point and in the next episode, we shall witness what was Sage Vyaasa’s important reply on Yudishtra’s concerns! An interesting accord awaits us tomorrow! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 287 – Draupati puts Duryodhana to shame – A TURNING POINT in the Mahabharata!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed the Raaja-Suya Yaaga getting completed as per all the protocols and Yudishtra had done an extremely good job in executing it. Of course, not to forget – Bhagawan Krishna’s divine presence and Anugraha, the Raaja-Suya Yaaga went on successfully and during the course of the offering, we had also witnessed Sishupaala being killed as well. As Sishupaala completed his hundredth’s mistake, Bhagawan Krishna employed His Chakra-Aayudha to finish him off, thus, sending him straight to Vaikunta, liberating him from Sage Sanaka’s curse. Meanwhile after the Yaaga was over, Duryodhana and Co. who were also part of the function, wanted to stay back at Indraprastha for a few more days to observe the beauty of the place. As planned, Duryodhana goes around the palace and is wonderstruck upon seeing its beauty! The craftiness with which it was built, stunned Duryodhana beyond words! He did not have words to describe the beauty of the Indraprastha palace. However, instead of appreciating and congratulating Yudishtra for this, jealousy and anger were burning inside Duryodhana as he couldn’t digest Yudishtra’s meteoric rise as a righteous king. Duryodhana was extremely concerned that Yudishtra would excel beyond him and King Dhridiraashtra in terms of name and fame.

As Duryodhana was walking along, there seemed like a wall in between the passage, however, as he went closer, there was no wall there! However, at another place, the passage seemed to go on, but as Duryodhana went ahead, there was a wall, upon which he banged his head! Similarly, it seemed that there was a pond full of water at a distance, but when Duryodhana went closer to it, he found that there was neither a pond nor any water! It was totally dry! It was a beautiful mirage and a 3-D projection! However, at one place, it seemed to be completely dry and unfortunately when Duryodhana walked through it, there was a pond of water and accidentally put his feet into it! Finally, at one point, Duryodhana had accidentally fallen into a place where there was an abundant amount of water! The place through which he was walking through, was extremely beautiful and rapturous as it caught Duryodhana’s eye so much. Gazing at the beauty thus, Duryodhana was walking without seeing what was in front of him! Finally, the passage ended into a pool and he accidentally slipped his feet into it. With this, his entire attire got wet.

Now this was a crucial juncture – Upon hearing a sound of someone falling down, Draupati who was in one of the nearby chambers, came out to check what had happened. To her utter amazement, she saw Duryodhana trying to rise on his feet again after getting drenched in the pool of water. As this was happening, Draupati laughed at Duryodhana’s state! She laughed out loudly, which irked Duryodhana even more! On one side, Duryodhana was embarrassed and wasn’t able to talk anything back, and on the other side, he was fuming in anger over Draupati’s act. With his face getting white with shame and anger, Duryodhana rushed out from that spot and immediately left back to Hastinapura along with Duchhaasana and Karna. He couldn’t bare the insult that was meted out to him by Draupati, who made fun of him!

Thus, as Duryodhana fumes and goes back to Hastinapura, we enter into the all-important “Dyutha-Parva”. As we might know,  “Dyutham” means “Gambling”, and it is in this main “Parva” that we’re going to witness the entire proceedings of the gambling game and how things unfolded drastically at Hastinapura. So for today, let us understand up to this point and in the next episode, we shall witness how things unfolded one after the other. Meanwhile, we’ve to see how Duryodhana prepared King Dhridiraashtra for the game of gambling. We shall commence the details of the “Dyutha Parva” from tomorrow! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 286 – Duryodhana FUMES with anger & jealousy as he goes around the Indraprastha palace!!!

In the previous episode, we were at an important juncture wherein Sishupaala was killed by Bhagawan Krishna on the spot, as he crossed his hundredth abuse towards Bhagawan Krishna. It should be remembered by readers that Sishupaala and Dantavaktra were none other than Jaya and Vijaya of Vaikunta, who were cursed by Sage Sanaka for not allowing him inside to meet Bhagawan Vishnu. Thus, according to this curse, both of them were born thrice in this world as Raakshasas at different Yugas – During the Krita Yuga, they were born as Hiranyaksha and Kiranya-Kashibu. Hiranyaksha was killed by Bhagawan Vishnu directly, and Hiranya-Kashibu was killed by Bhagawan during His incarnation as Bhagawan Narasimha. Subsequently during the Tretha Yuga, they again took birth as Ravana and Kumbhakarna and they were killed and liberated again to Vaikunta by Bhagawan Vishnu, who had incarnated as Bhagawan Rama. Now, we’re witnessing the events that happened during the Dwaapara Yuga, and during this time, the duo again took birth as Sishupaala and Dantavaktra, only to be killed and liberated by Bhagawan Krishna. Thus, Sishupaala was killed and with this, the insulting and abusing at Indraprastha came to a grinding halt.

Moving on thus, as Sishupaala was killed, the entire Sabha including all the Maharishi’s praised and worshipped Bhagawan Krishna. They hailed Bhagawan Krishna and considered themselves to be extremely fortunate to be amidst His divine presence. As Sishupaala was given “Moksha” in front of everyone, people who had gathered there also wished for the same as well! As ardent Bhagawan Krishna devotees, we can also wish for the same isn’t it? 🙂 Of course, at the moment we do not have the privilege to see and be amidst Bhagawan Krishna’s divine presence, but we can always pray to Him with our pure Bhakti and with this, Bhagawan Krishna would definitely answer our prayers. We should have this confidence within us as we move forward in our various walks of life. Problems might keep coming and going in all our day-to-day lives. But if we have the faith and confidence that Bhagawan Krishna is always behind us and guiding us through these dark times, we shall be able to easily see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. Thus, the important message here for all of us is that, if we’re sincere in our prayers and approach towards “Dharma” and Bhagawan, He is never going to desert us. We’ve seen this as an example in innumerable instances of our Sanaatana Dharma literature, and moving forward, we’re going to witness many more such instances henceforth as well.

Thus, with this, the “Agra-Puja” continues and the Raaja-Suya Yaaga gets completed with all its grandeur and as per the procedures framed by our great Maharishis. As the Yaaga comes to a close, Bhagawan Krishna decides that it is time for Him to go back to Dwaraka again. Thus, with the permission from Yudishtra, Bhagawan Krishna leaves for Dwaaraka and with this, the grand Yaaga comes to a close! As Bhagawan Krishna leaves Indraprastha, all the others who had assembled for the Yaaga, also start leaving for their respective native places, with enormous gifts from Yudishtra. Bhishmachaarya also leaves back to Hastinapura, along with Guru Dhronaachaarya. However, Duryodhana, Ducchaasana, Karna, etc. who had assembled there, had other plans – They wanted to stay back at Indraprastha for a few more days to enjoy the beauty and vibrancy of the city and its grand palace. Yudishtra too was more than happy to let Duryodhana and Co. spend a few more days with all of them.

Thus, as things settle down, Duryodhana starts going around the Indraprastha palace to explore the various places around it. As he was going along, he was utterly amazed to see the great grandeur of the palace in all four directions! He was surprised to see the intricate art work and skill in the construction. At one point, as Duryodhana was walking through a passage, it seemed to him as if the passage came to an end, but the passage was still going on! At another point, Duryodhana thought that the passage was still on, but there was an “invisible wall” wherein he ended up banging his head! At another place, it appeared as if there was a pool full of water and it looked so beautiful. However, when he went closeby to check it out, there was not even a single drop of water! It was just a mirage, but it looked so real! However, at another end, it seemed like it was a dry place without anything, but when Duryodhana kept his feet there, he was dragged into a pool of water! Experiencing all these, Duryodhana walked along and as he did so, his anger, jealousy and fury started growing multifold! He was fuming with anger that these Paandavas have managed to escape out of his traps everytime and they’ve ended up living in such a plush bungalow-like palace, which was a thousand times more beautiful and richer as compared to Duryodhana’s Hastinapura palace! Readers might remember that Duryodhana and Co. wickedly took a decision to hand over a barren piece of land called “Kaandava-Prastha”, and this is exactly the same place which has been transformed into a magnificent and a sprawling place!

Upon seeing all this thus, Duryodhana was fuming with jealousy and anger and for today, let us understand up to this point! We shall continue this discussion in the next episode to witness what happened further and how did Duryodhana react to all these! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 285 – Bhagawan Krishna kills Sishupala – Liberates him back to Vaikunta!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed the continuation of the “Agra-Puja” that was being offered by Sahadeva to Bhagawan Krishna, even as Sishupaala continued his ranting against Him. In the meanwhile, as Sishupaala continues his rant, Bhishmachaarya explains the background story of Sishupaala and how he was born with three eyes and four hands as an abnormal child. Further, he explains that one of the main purposes of Bhagawan Krishna’s incarnation is to kill Sishupaala as he was a Raakshasa. Bhishmachaarya thus describes all these points to drive home the fact that Sishupaala is a worthless fellow and people should not take his words seriously. As Bhishmachaarya describes thus, Sishupaala gets even more furious and doubles his ranting rate towards Bhagawan Krishna. As we’ve witnessed yesterday, Bhagawan Krishna had given an assurance to Sishupaala’s mother that He would keep forgiving Sishupaala until he makes a hundred insults / mistakes. Once the number crosses hundred, He would leave it fate to take over!

Thus here, Sishupaala continues his rant, and Bhagawan Krishna waits patiently for the hundredth insult to come by. The moment the number crosses one hundred, Bhagawan Krishna immediately decides that enough is enough! Time has come for Sishupaala to be killed! Thus, Bhagawan Krishna stands up from His seat and along with Him, the “Chakra-Aayudha” also comes out in Bhagawan’s divine hands! Bhagawan’s fury now knows no bounds! He has had enough with Sishupaala. Although Bhagawan was furious outside, He knew that Sishupaala was none other than the Jaya-Vijaya duo at Vaikunta, who were none other than His own ardent devotees! Thus, even though Bhagawan was angry, His compassion towards Sishupaala took over at one point. It is now for Sishupaala to take a decision – Whether to continue ranting further, or to seek forgiveness to Bhagawan. As Sishupaala looks at Bhagawan Krishna as the “Shanka-Chakra-Dhaari”, his heart slowly started to melt! Who on this earth cannot melt down upon seeing Bhagawan in this form? How fortunate was Sishupaala to have Bhagawan Krishna’s divine “Darshan” with the “Shankam” on one hand and the “Chakra” on the other! With this, Sishupaala broke down into tears and sank on the floor speechless!

However, the hundredth mistake is up, and Sishupaala has breached the hundredth mark! Thus, Bhagawan Krishna too did not have an option but to kill him then and there. Hence, with His divine “Chakra”, Bhagawan Krishna kills Sishupaala on the spot and thus, liberates him back to Vaikunta! With this, the Jaya-Vijaya duo were also released from the curse that Sage Sanaka had given them three “Yugas” ago! As Sishupaala was being attacked by Bhagawan Krishna’s “Chakra”, he did not even make an attempt to defend himself. He suddenly came to know that Bhagawan Krishna who was standing in front of him was none other than Bhagawan Vishnu Himself who had incarnated just to liberate him to “Moksha”. Thus, even though Sishupaala was a Raakshasa by birth, Bhagawan Krishna’s compassion knew no bounds! He made sure that Sishupaala reached the highest “Moksha” without any hassles!

This was the same case with Ravana as well. We’ve seen this during our earlier Ramayana project as to how Bhagawan Rama liberated both Ravana and Kumbhakarna during the war. Kumbhakarna realized much earlier that Bhagawan Rama was none other than Bhagwan Vishnu Himself, however, since it was his duty to fight for his brother Ravana, Kumbhakarna reluctantly went to the warfield and Bhagawan Rama killed him. At the end, Bhagawan Rama made sure that Kumbhakarna realises who he really was and thus, Kumbhakarna was extremely happy and felt fortunate to be in front of Bhagawan during his last breath. This was the similar case with Ravana as well. Finally as Ravana was about to breathe his last, Bhagawan Rama revealed His true form to him, thus leaving Ravana in tears! He thus realized his mistake of unnecessarily abducting Mother Sita and hurting Bhagawan Rama so much all these years! Thus, this realization that Ravana had, even though it was too late, was good enough for Bhagawan Rama to grant him the highest “Moksha”. We should understand that this Ravana-Kumbhakarna duo was none other than the same Jaya-Vijaya duo of Vaikunta!

Thus, for today, let us understand up to this point, wherein Bhagawan Krishna has killed Sishupaala and thus, liberated him to Vaikunta again. We shall continue this discussion forward in the next episode to witness what happened at Indraprastha after this. Stay tuned! 🙂
