Episode # 324 – Bhishmachaarya & Guru Dhronachaarya are SILENT as Vidura continues his earnest appeal!!!

We’re at an extremely important juncture and turn of events wherein the gambling game (Dyutam) is progressing swiftly with Yudishtra losing each and every move of it. It all starts with a small garland being under bet, and subsequently the bet becomes bigger and bigger. At one stage, Yudishtra even loses his entire set of servants, his other key people, his entire kingdom along with his army and elephants. Finally as Yudishtra has nothing to stake for bet, he looks around, only to find his four brothers standing by his side! As Yudishtra is about to stake his brothers, Vidura intervenes timely and demands King Dhridiraashtra to stop this nonsense from continuing! Vidura has had enough of this now! He once again makes an earnest appeal to King Dhridiraashtra to send the Paandavas back to their kingdom by reinstating Yudishtra as the king, as this method of abducting the kingdom is not valid by any means.

Now this is a clear “make-or-break” situation for King Dhridiraashtra, before things nosedive into disaster mode! As Vidura continues thus, he turns towards Bhishmachaarya and Guru Dhronachaarya and appeals to them thus, “Oh Bhishmachaarya! Don’t you understand that whatever is happening here is totally illegal and is going to end up in a disaster? You are the senior most person in this family isn’t it? Why don’t you get up and talk? Why don’t you support my words? Why don’t you stand up for “Dharma”? Oh! Guru Dhronachaarya! You’re perfectly capable of stopping this nonsense aren’t you? One word from your mouth would put an end to all this! So please get up and talk! Please acknowledge my words for the good of this kingdom! King Dhridiraashtra thinks that his son is winning for the moment. But in the long run, he is not realizing that his son is going to be the biggest loser of all times! He might win Indraprastha by cheating Yudishtra today. But he can never cheat Bhagawan Krishna tomorrow, who is always by the side of the Paandavas. The Paandavas have “Dharma” by their side and Bhagawan Krishna would always favor only those who stand by “Dharma”. You might think today that you can cheat them! But you do not know who Bhagawan Krishna really is. If He thinks of cheating all of you, He could do it with just a small laughter! But He is very patient with all of us. He’s giving us opportunities to mend ourselves. If we do not utilize them today, things are going to be too late afterwards!”

Even as Vidura makes this earnest appeal, both Bhishmachaarya and Guru Dhronachaarya keep mum! Although they are suffering internally with pain, upon seeing what is unfolding, they are scared to open their mouths and talk! Bhishmachaarya does not know what to talk to King Dhridiraashtra, and so is Guru Dhronachaarya! This is the clear difference between Vidura and Bhishmachaarya. At a critical point wherein “Dharma” is under the scanner, Vidura was the person who stood for “Dharma” and had the guts to criticise King Dhridiraashtra, whereas, Bhishmachaarya chose to remain silent, just because King Dhridiraashtra was like his own son and he wasn’t able to talk against him. Guru Dhronachaarya also chose to remain silent because his thought process was that Duryodhana and Co. were the people who gifted him with all the luxuries that he has currently. Hence, as a token of “gratitude” to Duryodhana, he became a mute spectator to all the atrocities that Duryodhana did.

Thus, the important lesson for all of us here is that, if a person is talking in favour of “Dharma” and if his points are very valid to the situation, we should support that person, no matter who he is and who the other person is. We should never bring in the “human” element in between “Dharma”. In other words, if we’ve to weigh between “Dharma” and “People”, the heavier thing should always be “Dharma”. At the same time, if Bhagawan comes closer to us, and if we’ve to weigh “Bhagawan” vs. “Dharma”, Bhagawan should always weigh more! We can forsake “Dharma” at that point and go and capture Bhagawan’s divine lotus feet! Thus, when a scholarly person like Vidura is telling something, it was the duty of Bhishmachaarya and Guru Dhronachaarya to stand by Vidura and support him. However, both of them failed in their duty, owing to the “gratitude” that they had towards King Dhridiraashtra and Duryodhana! Thus, we can clearly see that the biggest mistake which Bhishmachaarya and Guru Dhronachaarya made was that they weighed people more than the “Dharma”, which led to their downfall!

However, Vidura was steadfast in this – He clearly weighed “Dharma” over “People” and this is what led him to render this important advice amidst everybody in the courtroom. Vidura never feared whether there would be a backlash from Duryodhana if he talks such things! Vidura also never feared if King Dhridiraashtra would openly oppose him in public! He did his duty as an able minister to King Dhridiraashtra! It is this clarity that all of us should develop. If we’ve to stand for “Dharma” at any situation, we’ve to be able to differentiate people from “Dharma” clearly. Just because we’ve to support our kith and kin, we should never compromise on “Dharma”. Moving on thus, Vidura continues his advice further. He is now explaining how “Atman” has to be given top priority over “Deham”. He is explaining how King Dhridirashtra and Duryodhana are giving more importance to the “Deha-Soukhyam” rather than the “Atma-Soukhyam”. This is an important point that Vidura is going to make, and for this, we shall wait till the next episode to understand it in detail! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 323 – The game moves towards a disaster – Vidura appeals to King Dhridiraashtra to stop it!!!

In the previous episode, we’ve witnessed the commencement of the infamous gambling game and we’re at an important juncture wherein the plot of the Sahuni-Duryodhana duo starts working excellently well for them. Yudishtra is completely lured into the game, even though he initially had his apprehensions about it, however, since he had taken up the “Shabadham” of not going hammer and tongs on people for anything, he had no other option but to go with whatever was happening around him. At one point, he had to give in to Sahuni’s narrative, even though he knew that this was going towards a disastrous consequence. Thus, the game began and Yudishtra commences with betting a precious gem-made garland and ends up losing it to Sahuni’s vicious dice! Subsequently, Yudishtra places a thousand gold coins as bet, and again ends up losing all of them! This continued for a while and all through the game, Yudishtra never tasted victory even once!

Subsequently, as the game progressed and as Duryodhana started to taste victory again and again, his arrogance also started to increase proportionately. Yudishtra still had the opportunity to call the game off, given his losing streak, but he too did not want to give it up. Of course, if he gives up at this point, he would be branded as a loser and a coward who doesn’t have the guts to continue the game and win it. Thus, Yudishtra too has to play along and go with the flow. Now it is time for Yudishtra to go for some bigger bets – He now places all his servants, maids, and some key people of his Indraprastha kingdom as a bet and plays – Only to lose all of them to the Sahuni-Duryodhana duo! Sahuni’s vicious  dice starts ruling the roost and Yudishtra just becomes a mute spectator to all that’s unfolding! In the next round, Yudishtra places all his elephants, horses, etc. that are part of his grand army and plays. Again, he encounters the same result! Duryodhana roars with laughter as his side is becoming victorious minute after minute!

As Yudishtra has now lost all his army, his servants, his key people in the kingdom, etc., he is in a pitiable situation! Yudishtra is shocked beyond words as he loses time and again! He understands that something is greatly wrong behind this entire game and there seems to be some force acting against him. As Yudishtra was stunned, Sahuni asks him jokingly thus, “Oh Yudishtra! Till now you’ve played the game very nicely! However, to your bad luck you’ve lost whatever you’ve placed as the bet. But it’s okay! You can still win all of them back! Now what else do you have to stake as a claim and continue the game? Please understand that the game is not over as yet! There’s much more to come and a lot to play!” Saying thus, Sahuni motivates Yudishtra to go for the next bet, even though he literally had none to stake and continue. As Yudishtra looks around to see who else and what else is there to stake, his eyes fall on his four brothers who were sitting beside him! He was going to stake all his four brothers and play the game and was about to make the move, as Sahuni and Duryodhana were eagerly waiting for this to happen!

It is at this crucial juncture wherein Vidura gets up from his seat! He has had enough! He is overseeing the entire game that is unfolding, and “Adharma” is slowly moving towards its peak. He couldn’t tolerate this anymore and decides to convince and caution King Dhridiraashtra once again. In fact, Vidura was the only person who had the guts to get up and talk, while all the other seniors like Bhishmachaarya, Guru Dhronaachaarya, Sage Kripachaarya, etc. were mute spectators of the game! Vidura talks to King Dhridiraashtra thus, “Oh King Dhridiraashtra! Enough is enough! Please, let us stop this here! This is going to lead us to disaster and I can already see this right in front of my eyes! If Yudishtra has to be pushed to stake his four brothers and continue to play the game, all hell would break loose! Please listen to my words atleast now! Even now it is not too late! Please nullify this game and send Yudishtra and Co. back to Indraprastha with due respect! Please understand that Hastinapura is at a tipping point here – If things proceed as it is now, we’re going to enter into an uncharted territory wherein disaster is imminent! Your son Duryodhana is going to experience a huge setback! Oh King Dhridiraashtra! I plead to you with folded arms! Please listen to my words and do the needful!”

Pleading with tears in his eyes, Vidura continues thus, “Oh King Dhridiraashtra! If a person is sick with some disease, he has to take medicine to cure himself from it. But if the person decides to die of that disease, he would start feeling reluctant to take that medicine which can cure him. You are in this same state now – I’m warning you of an imminent danger to you and your entire Kaurava clan if this game is proceeding any further! Please take this as a medicine and cure the disease. You still have time! You’ve decided to move towards disaster and this is why my words aren’t getting into your ears! Please do not go this way. I request you with folded hands! The Paandavas have Bhagawan Krishna by their side. I do not see any loss to Yudishtra and Co. at all! Maybe Duryodhana can still go ahead and win this stupid game, but in the long run, I see Duryodhana getting destroyed completely! Oh King Dhridiraashtra! Please understand one thing here – Duroydhana is not your son! He is none other than “Kaala-Devata” in your son’s form and is searching for your downfall. You’re thinking that “Kaala-Devata” is somebody else in the form of Yudishtra and Co. But unfortunately, you have the “Kaala-Devata” right inside your own house in the form of your own son! But who is the “Kaala-Devata” for your son? You are the “Kaala-Devata” for him! Because, as a father, you’re failing in your duty to mend your son’s ways. If he’s going behind wrong things in life, who has to intervene and correct him? It’s your duty! By letting Duryodhana go behind gambling and other illegal affairs, you’re only destroying your son’s future. You might think that Duryodhana might be extremely successful after winning this stupid game! You’re wrong! He’s going to meet an ultimate disastrous end very soon!”

As Vidura advises thus, the game comes to a halt for a few minutes. The ball is now in King Dhridiraashtra’s court. Is he going to take a stern decision atleast now to put a full stop to this game, or is he going to let Duryodhana continue it further? Stay tuned for an important accord tomorrow!

Episode # 322 – The infamous “DYUTAM” game begins – Yudishtra on a losing streak straightaway!!!

In the previous episode, we have witnessed Yudishtra making a last-ditch attempt with Sahuni uncle to try and somehow stop the Dyutam game from going forward. He explains how Dyutam is something that is completely illegal and it brings about detrimental effects to the king as well as to the kingdom as a whole. Moreover, Dyutam brings about enmity between great friends and brothers too, which would spoil the relationships completely. Hence, given these dangerous aftermath effects, why at all should we proceed with this? Instead, Yudishtra explains that since all of them are great Kshatrya princes trained under a great Guru, they should express their talent and have friendly fights in the right way. As Yudishtra expresses his stance in a polite and a calm manner, Sahuni immeditely rejects Yudishtra’s points of view. Sahuni says that the Dyutam is nothing wrong in today’s world and asks Yudishtra to stop his “Vedanta” then and there! Sahuni reminds Yudishtra that he has accepted the offer to play the game and after accepting, there’s no point in going back without playing it. With this, Yudishtra’s last-ditch attempt also ended in a failure, as he did not have any other option but to go ahead. All of them have taken their seats and the game is ready to begin anytime from now!

Thus, the time comes for the betting to start. Both the sides – Duryodhana, Karna, etc. along with Yudishtra, Bheemasena, Arjuna, etc. are getting prepared to go for the first round of betting. At this crucial juncture, Duryodhana declares to the entire audience as King Dhridiraashtra, Bhishmachaarya, etc. look on. Duryodhana says thus, “Oh Yudishtra! I shall hereby do the betting, whereas my uncle Sahuni would roll the dice! I wouldn’t touch the dice at all and it is the responsibility of Sahuni uncle to make sure that I win all the bets that I keep!” As Duryodhana declares thus, Yudishtra raises an objection immediately: “Oh Duryodhana! How fair is this? How can you do the betting and someone else rolls the dice? You should be doing both. On our side, I’m the one who is doing both the betting and rolling the dice isn’t it? Aren’t you going against the rules of the game?” As Yudishtra asks thus, Duryodhana immediately answers back thus, “Oh Yudishtra! Why can’t this happen? For instance, if a person has to perform a Yagnya, he might not be competent enough to perform it all by himself. Hence, it is quite normal for him to have a Pandit who is an expert in offering the Yagnya as per the rules, isn’t it? Here also it is the same – Since I’m not that competent in rolling the dice, I’m using the expertise of my uncle here! So what’s wrong with this? Hence, I shall stick to my stance that I’m taking here!”

Duryodhana’s logic was right, for which Yudishtra did not have a concrete counter argument. Hence, he had no option but to accept Duryodhana’s point of view and with this, the game was about to begin. It was Yudishtra’s turn to place the first bet! He takes out his garland which is full of high-priced “Ratna” stones and places it as a bet. It all starts with some small things like this, and only as the game goes forward, bigger things would come! Thus, Yudishtra places a garland as a bet and Duryodhana also places an equivalent of it as his bet. As the bets were placed on both sides, Duryodhana proposes one number to be shown on the dice after it is rolled. Sahuni prays with his hands folded and rolls the dice! To Yudishtra’s dismay and to Duryodhana’s joy, the number that Duryodhana wanted to appear, exactly appears on the dice! Thus, the first round of betting is now won by Duryodhana and Co.! Sahuni declares the victory of Duryodhana and all the items that were on the bet now belong to Duryodhana! Yudishtra’s “Ratna” garland was taken away by Duryodhana promptly!

Unfazed by this, Yudishtra said thus, “Oh Duryodhana! Fine! This was just a small bet from my side. Now I’ll go for the bigger one – A bag full of a thousand gold coins! I’m keeping this as my second bet! Duryodhana too placed an equivalent set of gold coins as his bet. Sahuni rolls the dice once more and Duryodhana’s favourite number appears on the dice once again! Duryodhana wins the second round as well! All the thousand gold coins of Yudishtra became Duryodhana’s! As the game progressed thus, Yudishtra became more and more involved in it. He was steadfast in winning whatever he lost. Now the third round of gamble is going to start – Yudishtra’s bet was a thousand elephants! Once again the dice was rolled and once again it came in favour of Duryodhana! Sahuni was a real expert in this and Duryodhana reaped the benefit! All the thousand elephants that Yudishtra had placed, became his!

Now for the fourth round – Duryodhana was flying high with confidence! His plan was slowly working to perfection! Step after step, Yudishtra is losing and Duryodhana is using Yudishtra’s “innocence” and is slowly gaining ground! The fourth round witnesses Yudishtra placing a thousand servants as a bet. Duryodhana does the same and the dice are rolled! To Yudishtra’s shocking dismay, the dice shows up the number that Duryodhana wanted! With this, Duryodhana wins the fourth round as well! The thousand servants of Yudishtra become Duryodhana’s! This continues round after round! Yudishtra is constantly on the losing side and at one stage, he doesn’t know how to proceed further!

So for today, let us understand up to this point and in the next episode we shall witness how the game proceeded further! A devastating accord on the Paandavas’ side awaits us tomorrow! Stay tuned!

Episode # 321 – Yudishtra’s last-ditch attempt with Sahuni to stop the “Dyutam” game – A failure!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed how the plan was going in favour of Sahuni and Duryodhana as Yudishtra accepted the invitation extended by King Dhridiraashtra through Vidura. Even though Yudishtra had a detailed deliberation with Vidura, as things would have it, Yudishtra ended up accepting the invitation, because he had to protect his “Shabadham” of not hurting anyone, and also had to pertain to the “Raaja-Dharma” of giving reciprocal respect to a king. Thus, the stage was set for the game and Vidura left Indraprastha with a pained heart, knowing where this game is going to take the kingdom to! At every instance till that point, Yudishtra would normally have the final consultation with Bhagawan Krishna before making the final call, but strangely this time around, Bhagawan Krishna was entirely missing in the picture! He had apparently gone to the “Shaalva Desha” for a war and had become unreachable to Yudishtra and Co. This was a perfect move by Bhagawan Krishna, as He had vowed to destroy the root of “Adharma” in this world. If He had to achieve that, He had to allow this gambling game to go ahead without His intervention. If He had been with Yudishtra at that point, certainly He would have been forced to advise Yudishtra not to go for it, and Duryodhana would have never committed all the crimes that he had to! This is how Bhagawan’s divine “Leela” works! At some instances it would seem as if Bhagawan is silently favouring the bad, but at the end, He would return it with interest and protect “Dharma”. This is a perfect example of the same! Now let us see what unfolded next!

As Vidura leaves, Yudishtra prepares himself to commence his journey towards Hastinapura along with his brothers and Draupati. Yudishtra gives all the “Dhaanam” to the Brahmins in the kingdom before he embarks his journey, as per the “Raaja-Dharma”. With the divine blessings of the Brahmins, Yudishtra makes his way to Hastinapura and reaches the palace in a short while. As the Paandavas reach Hastinapura, they start meeting all the great Maharishis in the palace and in the surroundings. With their divine “Anugraha”, Yudishtra goes straight to King Dhridiraashtra’s chamber, meets him and seeks his “Anugraha”. Subsequently, he goes to Gaandhaari and seeks her “Anugraha”. Next comes Vidura – As all of us know, Vidura blesses Yudishtra with the strength and resolve to face any adversities that might come through on the way to protect “Dharma”. Vidura’s sole interest is “Dharma” and nothing else as we’ve witnessed earlier as well. Hence, his “Anugraha” was directed in that way.

Finally after meeting all the others including Bhishmachaarya, Guru Dhronaachaarya, etc. Yudishtra and Co. make their way to the courtroom. King Dhridiraashtra, Bhishmachaarya, Guru Dhronaachaarya, Sage Kripachaarya, and all the other seniors also slowly assemble at the courtroom. Sahuni and Duryodhana take their respective places, and Yudishtra along with his brothers takes his place that was allotted for him. As people were slowly assembling, Yudishtra also tries to make a last-ditch attempt to prevent this game from going forward. In the sidelines of all the arrangements that were going on, Yudishtra meets Sahuni and says thus, “Oh Sahuni uncle! Why should we play this illegal game in front of the entire courtroom? Isn’t it against “Raaja-Dharma”? If we play this game here, there would be so much negative vibrations and negative thoughts against each other. We would end up losing our peace of mind completely and enmity would start brewing! Hence, even now it is not too late! Let us stop this immediately!”

As Yudishtra says thus, Sahuni smartly replies back: “OH Yudishtra! All the arrangements are made and we’re waiting for you to start the game. The dice are here in front of you! You may go ahead, roll them and see if you can win it! If you win, you might be able to become rich extremely fast!” This answer from Sahuni was not very convincing for Yudishtra. He replies back thus, “Oh Sahuni! Why are you talking so high of this illegal business? If I want to make money and wealth, I can do it in so many other legitimate ways. I do not need to make money through this illegal way. Moreover, I’ve always heard that Dyutam is one of the worst things that a king can get into. It is addictive and dangerous. Why are you speaking so high of this illegal game? All of us are excellently trained in various aspects of warfare like bow and arrow, swords, “Gatha”, etc. Hence, as confident “Kshatrya” princes and kings, we should involve ourselves in those kinds of games rather than these! Moreover, such practices would not be appreciated by elders and Maharishis!”

As Yudishtra explains his stance thus, Sahuni gets a bit irritated! He replies back thus, “Oh Yudishtra! Could you please stop all your “Vedanta”? Now this is not the time for your advice! This is the time to play the game and see who wins. It is not fair on your part to keep on saying that Maharishis wouldn’t accept this practice, and elders would scold! Who are they? Are they in the contemporary world? They do not know the practicality and they are in an imaginary world! Hence let us start the game without wasting any more time!” This is exactly how all of us respond when someone renders some important advice to us pertaining to certain aspects of “Dharma”! If someone is trying to mend our way, we would immediately discard their advice saying that there is a “generation gap”, isn’t it? This is exactly what Sahuni is also saying to Yudishtra!

Moreover, we should also understand one important point from Yudishtra’s accord – We should never do any actions that elders and Maharishis discourage us from doing! This is something that is highlighted across the Sanaatana Dharma literature at various points. We’ve seen this during our previous Ramayana project as well. Ravana did something that wasn’t recommended by elders. Vibhishana tried to stop him, but in vain. Ravana had to meet a ghastly end because of what he did to Bhagawan Rama. Similarly here also, Duryodhana and Sahuni are discarding Yudishtra’s golden words of “Dharma” and are trying to push him into this illegal game. At some points in time, words of wisdom (“Vedanta”) might be very painful and we might be unable to accept those. However, if we take that effort to understand the Vedanta and if we try to follow it in our lives, we would start experiencing real happiness as time progresses.

So for today, let us understand up to this point, as Yudishtra and the others take their respective places! The last-ditch attempt of Yudishtra also seems to be on the failing route! In the next episode we shall find this out in detail as we move on further! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 320 – Yudishtra accepts King Dhridirashtra’s offer – Arjuna warns him!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed an important conversation between Yudishtra and Vidura at Indraprastha, where Vidura is extending the invitation for the gambling game under the leadership of King Dhridiraashtra at Hastinapura. Upon hearing this, Yudishtra understands that the next big storm is brewing around the corner. It is evident to him that this isn’t King Dhridiraashtra’s decision to do this illegal affair, but he was being totally dominated and misguided by someone “behind the screen”. As Yudishtra raises his concerns with Vidura, Vidura tells him what happened at Hastinapura and how he tried to stop this disaster from happening. However, King Dhridiraashtra went ahead and discarded Vidura’s words and here he is in front of Yudishtra to call him to Hastinapura for the game. As Vidura says thus, he also lets out an advisory that Yudishtra can play his cards cleverly – Either he could accept the invitation and come to Hastinapura for the game, or he could always reject the offer. The choice is Yudishtra’s to make. However, Vidura also advises to “go with the flow” and “Dharma” would take care of the Paandavas at all times – Courtesy Bhagawan Krishna.

It is now a “do-or-die” situation for Yudishtra at this stage – He has to play his card smartly by not going against the Raaja Dharma on multiple fronts! What does he do? Yudishtra thinks for a while and comes up with his decision thus: “Oh scholarly Vidura! I understand all the points that you’ve put forward to me as a token of advice. I’ve also analyzed the pros and cons of all what you’ve said till now. My decision here would be to accept King Dhridiraashtra’s invitation for the gambling game! I take this decision because as per the Raaja-Dharma, a king should never reject another king’s invitation, even though it might be for a legal / illegal purpose. If I end up rejecting the proposal, it would be like disrespecting King Dhridiraashtra and his high stature. Of course, I know that the purpose for which he’s inviting me is an illegal one. For this, I put the onus on “Dharma” and Bhagawan Krishna and accept it, even if it is illegal! Let us go and play the game. Let us win some things and lose some things. All these are part and parcel of the game, isn’t it?”

Thus, Yudishtra lets out his decision loud and clear! Readers should also understand one more important background to Yudishtra’s decision. In our previous episodes, we had discussed in detail, the “Shabadhams” (Resolves) that Yudishtra had undertaken earlier. For instance, Yudishtra had taken a resolve that he wouldn’t hurt anybody either through words or through actions. He would not talk anything that harms others, etc. Hence, now if he rejects this proposal of King Dhridiraashtra, he would end up hurting King Dhridiraashtra and the others, which would in turn end up in deviating from his resolve, isn’t it? Hence, this was also one of the prime reasons that played in Yudishtra’s mind before taking this decision. Thus, Yudishtra conveys his final decision to Vidura and Vidura sets off with the news that Yudishtra would be at Hastinapura very soon!

After Vidura’s departure, Yudishtra speaks about this important decision to his brothers. Upon hearing this, Bheemasena and Arjuna fume in anger. Arjuna replies to Yudishtra thus, “Oh elder brother! I know that your decision is purely based on the “Dharma” aspect. I do not have an iota of doubt on that. However, playing the gambling game would invite unwanted disasters isn’t it? Please remember – Sahuni uncle is an expert in the Dyutham game and he would play all his cards against you. End of the day, we would lose very badly and this seems to be a ploy created by Duryodhana to make us poppers! Hence, please let us not go ahead with this plan. You can even now reverse your decision by politely rejecting this dangerous offer!” As Arjuna says thus, Bheemasena too talks the same thing and warns Yudishtra of an imminent danger into which they are being pushed! However, Yudishtra was steadfast in his decision and convinced his brothers that they should go ahead with it, because this is the flow of “Dharma” and there is no other option!

All of us should understand one important thing here – It was a usual practice till now that before taking an important decision, Yudishtra would consult Bhagawan Krishna. We’ve seen this earlier too in many instances, isn’t it? However, for this decision to be taken, Yudishtra somehow missed the chance of consulting Bhagawan Krishna once! Till now we’ve never seen Bhagawan Krishna in the picture, haven’t we? Many of us might have been wondering where did Bhagawan Krishna go away all of a sudden! This is how Bhagawan played His divine Leela! Whenever some crucial things were supposed to happen, He would disappear mysteriously and let the event unfold! Else, if Bhagawan Krishna would have been there in the vicinity of the Paandavas, we can be sure that even if Yudishtra wouldn’t have spoken out, Arjuna would have definitely raised the red-flag with Bhagawan Krishna, and the entire Bhagawad Gita would have been out now itself! 🙂 However, Bhagawan had other plans! He wanted the entire event to unfold, and He wanted to use this as a trump card to destroy the entire Kaurava camp later on! The important point to be noted here is that, neither King Dhridiraashtra, nor Duryodhana or Yudishtra wanted a war. However, the war was in mind only for one person – Bhagawan Krishna! Thus, we can see here how fate can take its shape and ruin an entire kingdom and push many people into disasters!

So for today, let us understand up to this point and let us wait for the next episode to witness Yudishtra and the Paandavas going ahead to play the gamble! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 319 – Yudishtra raises the “RED FLAG” – Vidura advises to “go with the flow”!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed the continuation of King Dhridiraashtra’s last ditch attempts to convince Duryodhana to change his course away from the gambling game proposed by Sahuni. King Dhridiraashtra tries his level best to highlight how the gambling game is against the “Raaja-Dharma”, but a determined Duryodhana isn’t going to relent! This means that the game is going to go ahead and Vidura meanwhile has already reached Indraprastha to extend an invitation to Yudishtra to come and participate in it. King Dhridiraashtra, as we’ve seen till now, is a perfect example of a failed leader – In the sense that he wasn’t assertive enough to overpower his own son while taking a stance against his “Adharmic” activities. This is just the trailer, and in the coming episodes, we’re going to witness how King Dhridiraashtra is going to fail miserably in keeping a check on Duryodhana’s atrocities, and where this is going to lead the kingdom to!

Moving on further, as I had already mentioned yesterday, Vidura knocks the doors of the Indraprastha kingdom, and Yudishtra welcomes him with all the respects and reverence. Unlike Duryodhana, Yudishtra knows that Vidura is a “Mahatma” and he bows down to the great learned man! As Vidura settles down, he conveys the message to Yudishtra about the game of gambling that is arranged at Hastinapura and that, he has to come and participate as per King Dhridiraashtra’s wish. Upon hearing this proposal, Yudishtra initially did not know how to react. He asks Vidura back, “Oh great Vidura! You’re talking about Dyutam, which is against the course of “Raaja Dharma”. I’m sure learned scholars like you would appreciate this. Why did King Dhridiraashtra arrange for this game all of a sudden? Is everything going fine at Hastinapura? Didn’t you advise King Dhridiraashtra not to go down this path? I’ve always heard that playing the Dyutam game results in a huge disaster and a fight! Playing the Dyutham game would result in permanent enmity between the two camps, isn’t it? I’ve always heard that getting addicted to alcoholic drinks, getting addicted to gambling, getting addicted to women, etc. would only lead to disaster in this world. Didn’t you explain all this to King Dhridiraashtra? Or, is he dancing to someone else’s tunes? Who is trying to influence and misguide King Dhridiraashtra? I’m sure it is not his decision. Someone is behind him! Tell me what is exactly happening!”

As Yudishtra gives a long accord thus, Vidura is pained at heart even more. He did not expect Yudishtra to doubt his credibility and prowess on “Dharma”. Vidura replies back thus, “Oh Yudishtra! Do you think I wouldn’t have spoken against the Dyutham plan to King Dhridiraashtra? You’re young and if you’re able to talk this much “Dharma”, for my age and experience wouldn’t I talk? I did my part to the best of my ability. However, King Dhridiraashtra remains unfazed. He’s in an “ordering” mode, rather than “listening” mode. Duryodhana and Sahuni are behind this entire plan and conspiracy. Sahuni is fueling Duryodhana’s anger from behind the scenes and is only trying to bring about Duryodhana’s downfall, however, sadly Duryodhana doesn’t realize it. Sahuni is digging Duryodhana’s grave and sadly Duryodhana is royally going and falling into it! Hence, I left it to fate to take over. If one is not listening to the words of “Dharma” just because they aren’t “favourable” to them, it means that they’re walking towards the path of destruction. Time will teach them a befitting lesson! Oh Yudishtra! I too know the disastrous consequences of playing this illegal game. I explained everything to King Dhridiraashtra, but I failed to convince him! He’s not in a mood to listen to me anymore! He’s carried away by the excessive affection that he has towards his son! Till now I thought he was only externally blind. But today I realized that King Dhridiraashtra is internally blind too!”

Vidura says thus with tears in his eyes. Upon seeing this, Yudishtra quickly understands the impending conspiracy that he is being pushed into by Duryodhana and Sahuni. He realizes the cowardliness of Duryodhana in terms of not being able to take him down in a war, and instead, resorting to such illegal practices to establish himself. Thus, Yudishtra asks Vidura: “Oh Vidura! The great one! Your words are sounding a huge alarm bell for me! Please advise me as to how to go about this situation. I shall act as per your advice. Please guide me and my brothers!” As Yudishtra requests thus, Vidura replies, “Oh Yudishtra! There is no other option left at this moment. We’ve to go with the flow of things. You come along and participate in the game. We shall leave the rest to Bhagawan to take care! Put the onus on Bhagawan Krishna and come with me to Hastinapura to participate in the game! You stand by the “Dharma” of not rejecting a king’s offer, irrespective of whether it is right or wrong! But you decide! You may play your cards smartly. If however you’re not interested, you can very well convey it to me, and I shall convey it to King Dhridiraashtra and Duryodhana that you’re not going to participate in the game. The call is yours!”

This is an important point that all of us should note – If we’re giving advice to someone, we should leave it open-ended for the other person to make a decision. On the pretext of advising, we shouldn’t impose our ideas on someone. We should make sure that we give a leeway for the other person to think, assimilate the pros and cons of what we’re trying to explain, and then let the other person make the decision. We should always remember this as a leader, and this is exactly what Vidura is doing here – He’s explaining the course of action to be taken from his view point, and lets Yudishtra take the final call. At any point in time, the king / leader should be the final decision-making authority and the minister’s role is only to advise the king. Vidura plays his role to perfection, both with King Dhridiraashtra and King Yudishtra. However, we’re able to see how both these kings took contrasting decisions. One king turns away the advice of his minister blindly and the other king takes the minister’s advice in a positive manner and puts in his thought process to make the final decision.

So for today, let us understand this important point in the “Raaja-Dharma” with regards to decision-making and we shall wait till the next episode to witness what is going to be Yudishtra’s decision. Is he going to reject King Dhridiraashtra’s offer, or is he going to go by what Vidura advises? Stay tuned for an important accord! 🙂

Episode # 318 – Vidura meets Yudishtra at Indraprastha – Extends an invitation for the “Dyutam” game!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed things taking a drastic “U-turn” at Hastinapura, wherein the entire kingdom was moving towards a great disaster – Thanks to the masterminds of the Sahuni-Duryodhana duo. The “Dyutham” game was planned and King Dhridiraasahtra was forced to give the green signal for it, inspite Vidura’s appealing and emotional advice. Of course, Duryodhana discarded Vidura right at the onset of the entire plan, however, King Dhridiraashtra did not want to do that. He repeatedly tried convincing Duryodhana to shun this vicious plan, explaining to him that tomorrow it is going to be a great insult not for the Paandavas, but for Duryodhana and Co.! However, since King Dhridiraashtra was not assertive enough and his “Putra-Vaatsalya” (Excessive affection towards his son Duryodhana) taking over, Duryodhana started ruling the roost. He made the decision on behalf of his father that the game would go ahead as scheduled, with the help of his emotional victim card every now and then. Thus, we’re at a point wherein Vidura was asked to bring Yudishtra and Co. to Hastinapura and the arrangements were being made for the game to commence.

As Duryodhana leaves the chamber, he again turns to his father and gives him some pointers to think. Duryodhana says thus, “Oh father! Just like how a boat would take along another boat that is tied to it at one end, in the same direction, Vidura has tied you to himself and is trying to drag you wherever he wants to take you along! This is extremely wrong! Do you know where all these issues stemmed up from? It is only because you danced to Vidura’s tunes by splitting the Hastinapura kingdom and giving one portion to the Paandavas. Have you seen any king in history doing such a thing? On what basis did you split the kingdom? There was no locus-standi behind your decision. It was solely driven by Vidura. Even now you’re dancing to the tunes of Vidura, and trust me, your son is going to end up in a great disaster if you’re going to go this way. Hence, come my way. Let me guide you to the path of success. Even now it is not too late. We shall go ahead with the plan and like Sahuni uncle said, we shall re-capture the Indraprastha portion of Hastinapura without shedding a single drop of blood!”

As Duryodhana says thus, King Dhridiraashtra wasn’t very convinced with his argument. King Dhridiraashtra replies to Duryodhana thus, “Oh Duryodhana! I understand your point. But you’re making a mistake here – Please remember that the original king of Hastinapura was Paandu, who was the father of Yudishtra and Co. Hence, this kingdom should rightfully go to Paandu’s sons, isn’t it? It is only because of Paandu’s untimely demise, I had to sit on the throne and rule the kingdom. Moreover, even if that wasn’t the case, Yudishtra is none other than your brother. He’s not an outsider isn’t he? I had split the kingdom and given it to him only because Paandu was my own brother. This split was rightfully done within our family only isn’t it? So what’s the problem for you in this?” As King Dhridiraashtra replied thus, Duryodhana got angry again. He replies to his father thus, “Oh father! All what you’re talking about are old stories! Who is interested in listening to fairy tales of history? Let’s talk about the present day! Who cares what happened 50 years ago? The present situation here is that, Yudishtra is our threatening enemy and he might unleash his might at any time. If he does so, all of us are doomed. We’ve to somehow stop this from happening, and to achieve this, there’s nothing wrong in going to any extent! If there’s an enemy rising up in front of your eyes, what’s the point in talking about “Dharma” and “Adharma”? The only task for the king is to somehow finish off that enemy then and there!”

We might wonder one thing here – All these arguments that Duryodhana is putting forth, are modern day arguments! 🙂 We keep talking about all these ways and means in today’s scenario, but Duryodhana had spoken all these around 5000 years ago! Of course, we’re talking about the end of the “Dvaapara Yuga” and within the next few years, the present-day “Kali-Yuga” was about to kick in! Hence, these were glimpses of what was going to come in the future! Thus, King Dhridiraashtra completely failed in convincing Duryodhana as a “last-ditch” attempt and with this, Hastinapura started marching towards disaster! Vidura thus reaches Indraprastha to meet Yudishtra and Co. and Yudishtra welcomes him with all the respects. He makes Vidura comfortable and Bheemasena along with the others ensure the best hospitality for Vidura. Within Yudishtra’s mind, so many thoughts were running meanwhile – What is going to happen now? Is there any problem at Hastinapura? Is King Dhridiraashtra fine? What does he want from me now? Is it an attempt to unite the split family once again? Or, is there an imminent danger for which Vidura has come to warn us?” As all these questions run at the back of Yudishtra’s mind, Vidura commences his short straightforward speech.

Vidura talks to Yudishtra thus, “Oh Yudishtra! King Dhridiraashtra and the others at Hastinapura are doing good, and he wanted me to enquire about you and the Paandava brothers. I’ve come here to give an invitation for you – There is going to be a “Dyutham” game at Hastinapura and King Dhridiraashtra would be very happy if you can participate in the game. This is the piece of information that I wanted to convey to you!” Thus, Vidura conveyed the information straight to the point without mincing his words! So for today, let us understand up to this point and we shall wait till the next episode to witness Yudishtra’s reaction to this invitation! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 317 – King Dhridiraashtra’s “last-ditch” attempt to mend Duryodhana – A failure!!!

We’re at a decisive juncture wherein King Dhridiraashtra has taken a decision to go ahead with the “Dyutham” game, despite strong opposition from Vidura. In order to keep his word to Duryodhana, King Dhridiraashtra single-handedly discarded Vidura’s important advice and instructed him to go to Indraprastha and invite Yudishtra and Co. to participate in the game. Deeply dejected with King Dhridiraashtra’s wrong decision, Vidura leaves with a heavy heart and makes his way to Indraprastha to meet Yudishtra and Co. Meanwhile, as Vidura leaves Hastinapura, King Dhridiraashtra’s mind and conscience starts haunting him. Several thoughts were running in his mind – “Are Vidura’s words correct? Are we moving towards an unwarranted disaster? Is Duryodhana getting carried away by Sahuni’s words? Is Sahuni proving to be a wrong and a disastrous company for Duryodhana? Maybe should I talk to Duryodhana once and explain to him about the imminent disaster if the gambling game goes ahead as per schedule? What if Duryodhana bursts out in anger once more? What if my son gets upset if the game doesn’t go through? Will my son’s life be doomed by Yudishtra’s meteoric rise? Shouldn’t my son also be on par with Yudishtra?”

Having all these questions in mind, King Dhridiraashtra was clearly in a fix. He did not know how to move forward, although he has given orders to Vidura. Perhaps, is there still a small iota of a chance to reverse the decision? Maybe if he talks to Duryodhana one more time, will the disaster be averted? King Dhridiraashtra gives a deeper thought for a while and decides that he would talk to Duryodhana one more time. Perhaps at that time, he was emotionally disturbed, but maybe when he is calm, Duryodhana might understand the disaster that was coming through with the “Dyutham” game. King Dhridiraashtra might have externally talked rudely to Vidura and sent him away, but internally he knows that Vidura’s words were correct. King Dhridiraashtra explains to Duryodhana thus, “Oh Duryodhana! Please listen to my words – Playing the “Dyutham” game amidst the entire courtroom is an unruly affair and is totally against the “Raaja-Dharma”. Irrespective of whether you win or not, tomorrow the entire world will abuse you and brand you as a coward. The world would say that Duryodhana doesn’t have the guts to fight Yudishtra on the battlefield and instead, played a perverted game and cheated him! Are you going to live your entire life with this insult and defame? Please think about it. Moreover, Vidura just spoke to me and left. Of course, I’ve instructed him to go and call Yudishtra for the game, but before leaving, Vidura too had his opinion that this is going to invite unwanted disaster! Vidura is the son of Yama-Dharma-Raja and his words are definitely words of wisdom. Vidura till date has always stood by “Dharma” irrespective of whether you and I like it or not.

Hence, I feel that it is wise for us to stop it at this point itself. Even now it is not too late. Things are still under control. But if tomorrow the game happens and if it leads us to a disaster, it might be too late for us to resurrect ourselves. Also, please remember – Bhagawan Krishna is always by the side of Yudishtra and the Paandavas. If anything happens to them in the “Adharma” way, all of us are going to earn the wrath of Bhagawan Krishna! Hence, Duryodhana! Please think about these things and make an appropriate decision quickly. Please do not get carried away by Sahuni’s words. He seems to be vicious in his approach and is seeming to operate with an agenda in mind. Don’t fall prey to Sahuni’s words! This is my sincere advice from your father!”

As Duryodhana hears this long accord from his father, he once again burst out in anger! Duryodhana replies thus, “Oh father! I knew this would happen – This stupid Vidura would come and brainwash you! This is why I wanted to avoid him! Till Vidura came, you were in a good frame of mind, but now after Vidura’s so-called advice, you’ve been completely brainwashed! This “Dyutham” game should happen at any cost! If this is not happening as per plan, please understand – Your son’s fate is doomed under the hands of that treacherous Yudishtra! Do you want your son to be a servant under Yudishtra’s nose? Vidura wants it to happen. He’s favouring Yudishtra unduly! You’re not understanding Vidura’s vicious game – He is acting as if he’s true to you, but at the back, he is favouring Yudishtra and not you and me. Do not get carried away by Vidura’s words!”

Saying thus, Duryodhana flatly refused to pay heed to King Dhridiraashtra’s last-ditch attempt to convince him. Thus, King Dhridiraashtra sadly walked away from Duryodhana’s chamber and the decision was finalized – The “Dyutam” game would go ahead as planned! Duryodhana succeeds! This is where King Dhridiraashtra failed as a leader. Firstly he was unable to convince his own son with regards to his decision, and secondly he did not have the assertive power to stand by his decision, no matter whatever Duryodhana said and did! This weakness of King Dhridiraashtra was ably captured by Sahuni and Duryodhana and both of them eventually used him as a mere “rubber stamp” to push through with their vicious agenda. This is where a leader must be very careful – If he / she is not assertive enough, people around the leader would start taking him / her for a ride! This is exactly what happened in King Dhridiraashtra’s case. In fact, for King Dhridiraashtra things were worse – His own son took him for a ride!

More than anything else, fate also has a role to play in this. If Bhagawan has decided to weed out all the “Adharma” from the world, who can stop His divine “Sankalpa” (Will)? If things have to happen in a certain way, irrespective of however we try and change course, nothing will work beyond a point! Thus, the status at Hastinapura now is that the “Dyutham” game is going to go ahead as scheduled, and Vidura is going to bring Yudishtra and Co. along with him for the game! So for today, let us understand up to this point and we shall elaborate on this more in tomorrow’s episode! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 316 – Vidura fails to convince King Dhridiraashtra –  A decisive step towards disaster!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed King Dhridiraashtra giving instructions to Vidura to call Yudishtra and Co. for playing the game of gambling (Dyutham) versus Duryodhana and Sahuni. As Vidura heard these orders from King Dhridiraashtra, he was confused upon two accounts – Firstly, this was one of the first instances wherein King Dhridiraashtra made a decision on his own, without even consulting Vidura once. Secondly, since “Dyutham” is something that is against “Raaja-Dharma”, Vidura was sure that King Dhridiraashtra wouldn’t have taken this decision on his own. Vidura smelt some conspiracy that was going on behind King Dhridiraashtra, which, unfortunately he’s failing to understand. On the pretext of avoiding a major disaster from happening, Vidura lets out a warning to King Dhridiraaashtra that this “Dyutham” game is not to be played amidst the centre of courtrooms of kings, and it is something that brings down the name and fame of kings. However, by the time Vidura came and gave his advice, things were too late! King Dhridiraashtra had already made up his mind to go ahead with the game.

In return, King Dhridiraashtra replied angrily to Vidura by saying that he always supports the Paandava brothers and is only concerned about their cause. King Dhridiraashtra also alleged that Vidura never supported the cause of his son Duryodhana at any point in time. However, as we’ve witnessed yesterday, the case was actually the opposite – Vidura was always concerned about the welfare of Duryodhana and tried his best to correct him from the path of “Adharma” to “Dharma”. However, things never worked in Vidura’s way until the last moment. This is where we’ve to learn an important lesson – If “Dharmatmas” say something, we’ve to just close our mouths and follow whatever they say. This is because, we might not know where there would be problems and backfiring happening. Due to our state of living and all the luxuries that we experience in life, we might get carried away by all of them and would not be able to understand where we might have a downfall. Hence, it is always better to listen to people who are suffering on the ground and understand what is going on. This is where we always keep saying that we’ve to have ourselves “grounded” at all times. Only if we’re grounded, we would understand what is going on around us and how we should protect ourselves. This is exactly where King Dhridiraashtra went wrong. Every step that they took, was leading them towards a huge disaster. However, when Vidura highlighted them and advised them to take a step back, the father-son duo failed to understand Vidura’s words of wisdom.

Thus, readers must understand one important thing here – It is not wrong that we make mistakes in life. All of us make mistakes at various fronts and at various instances. However, if some experienced people show us the right path, we should have that maturity to accept it and move on as per their advice, rather than cross-questioning them and being arrogant. If we do this, there is always a chance for all of us to correct our mistakes and perfect ourselves, which is what Bhagawan expects us to do. The opportunity to correct ourselves might come from various fronts. Bhagawan wouldn’t come in person to correct us everytime. He would send the right people at the right time, or would create the right opportunities at the right time so that we correct our path. If we fail to grab these opportunities, whose fault is it at the end of the day? In the case of Duryodhana too, he had ample opportunities to resurrect his ways – He had Vidura by the side of him who lent able words of wisdom at every instance. Duryodhana discarded Vidura completely! Moreover, Duryodhana had able brothers in the form of Yudishtra and Co. who were genuinely concerned about his welfare, even though Duryodhana thought otherwise. In other words, Yudishtra and the Paandavas were affectionate and treated Duryodhana as their own brother, however, Duryodhana was only jealous and arrogant about Yudishtra’s rise. Over and above, Bhagawan Krishna Himself was there amidst all these people isn’t it? Who else would we require other than Bhagawan? Arjuna made full use of Bhagawan Krishna’s wisdom and divinity to progress in life, whereas, Duryodhana never even considered Bhagawan Krishna as an entity in his family. He only saw Bhagawan Krishna in an opportunistic way to win wars and to abduct all his army.

Hence, opportunities are plenty for all of us to mend our ways, however, the real question here is whether we’re utilising the opportunities in the genuine way or not. This is the secret behind “Dharma”, which many of us fail to understand throughout our lives. Thus, Vidura is advising King Dhridiraashtra not to go ahead with the “Dyutham” game as it can bring about great disasters moving forward. However, King Dhridiraashtra was firm in his decision. He replies to Vidura thus, “Oh Vidura! Let anything happen at Hastinapura, irrespective of success or disaster! I’m not bothered! I feel that this is the only way through which my son Duryodhana can attain success and peace of mind. Hence, if Duryodhana is feeling happy about it, let it happen. I wouldn’t stand in between. Hence, Vidura! Please go and execute the orders that I’ve issued – Please go to Indraprastha and invite the Paandavas to come to Hastinapura for the game!”

Pained deeply at heart, Vidura concludes that this is the decisive step towards disaster and it is too late for him to advise King Dhridiraashtra anymore! Vidura decides to go with the flow and starts from Hastinapura to Indraprastha. So for today, let us understand until this point and in the next episode we shall continue this discussion forward! Stay tuned! 🙂

Episode # 315 – “Gambling would lead to a great disaster” – Vidura sternly warns King Dhridiraashtra!!!

In the previous episode, we had witnessed a turning point wherein King Dhridiraashtra is slowly getting carried away by the “Putra-Vaatsalya”, thanks to Duryodhana’s emotional “victim card”! Duryodhana was dead against King Dhridiraashtra consulting with Vidura to give the “go-ahead” for the gambling game to take place. He shed tears and gave an emotionally damaging statement that King Dhridiraashtra and Vidura would be happy upon seeing Duryodhana dying in the hands of Yudishtra and Co. very soon! This changed King Dhridiraashtra completely and forever! Thus, from this day onwards, whatever decisions King Dhridiraashtra made were not according to the neutral “Raaja-Dharma”, but always in favour of his son Duryodhana. He still had the option of stopping the gambling game from happening, but he did not exercise his assertion. He knew that this gambing game was going to lead to a disaster, but his “Putra-Vatsalya” blinded him completely. Thus, Vidura was called and King Dhridiraashtra dictated the order to call Yudishtra for the gambling game at Hastinapura.

As Vidura heard this, he was confused! Many questions were running in his mind. Composing himself thus, Vidura asked King Dhridiraashtra: “Oh King! What is the sudden need for such a game to take place? Isn’t gambling an act against “Raaja-Dharma”? Why should we go for this? Somehow my intuition says that if we go ahead with this plan, it is going to lead us to a great disaster! Kindly let us stop this at the budding stage itself. Someone is fuelling this from behind and I think you’re being misled completely!” As Vidura opines thus, King Dhridiraashtra got angry! Duryodhana’s words of emotional blackmail were “working wonders” here! King Dhridiraashtra replies thus, “Oh Vidura! Why are you always talking against my son’s interests? What is your problem? You would never like it if my son Duryodhana is happy, isn’t it?” As King Dhridiraashtra replies thus, Vidura is pained at heart very deeply! He replies again to King Dhridiraashtra: “Oh Great King! You’re mistaking my intent time and again – I’m only thinking of Duryodhana’s welfare! You’re thinking that I’m always favouring the Paandavas. No! It’s not the case! Yudishtra has “Dharma” by his side, and his “Dharma” would save him from all obstacles. But Duryodhana is not walking the path of “Dharma” and this is my biggest concern at the moment! I’m trying to save your son Duryodhana from destruction! Please understand this! Moreover, by supporting your son Duryodhana for the path of “Adharma” that he is taking, a huge sharp knife is hanging close to your head! I only want to remove that knife and make sure that it doesn’t hurt you!”

We should understand one thing very clearly here – At the outset, it might sound as if Vidura is talking in favor of the Paandavas everytime. But that is not correct. Vidura is only trying to resurrect the Kauravas and King Dhridiraashtra from the path of “Adharma” to the path of “Dharma”. To be very upfront, Vidura is actually talking in favor of Duryodhana and Co. and not in favor of Yudishtra. His only concern is that, in the long-term, Duryodhana should succeed. His only worry was that Duryodhana was trying to take short-cuts to succeed, which is extremely dangerous and can be disastrous for his future. However, none of them, including King Dhridiraashtra and Duryodhana themselves understood this good intent of Vidura! Everytime when Vidura was sharing his opinion, both of them took it in a way that he was favouring the Paandavas, which was the biggest mistake they made! As we know, Vidura is an epitome of “Dharma” and he does not know how to speak “sugary language”. He is very straightforward and blunt in his words and opinions, which irked King Dhridiraashtra and Duryodhana everytime! This is not the first time that these two are getting irritated. This trend is going to continue till the very end!

So for today, let us understand Vidura’s opinion and intent in detail. Now the ball is in King Dhridiraashtra’s court – Should he pay heed to Vidura’s words or should he go ahead with Duryodhana’s plan? What is King Dhridiraashtra’s final decision? Let’s wait eagerly till the next episode to find out! Stay tuned! 🙂
