In the previous episode, we had witnessed a very important point with regards to the “Karma Phalam” that we’ve to experience for both our “Paapa Karma” and “Punya Karma”. There is definitely a time lag that happens between our actions and the results of them. This time lag is highly unpredictable as the effects do not happen immediately. The effects of our actions can come sooner or later during the same birth or even several births later as well. It is up to Bhagawan to decide when to give the effects of our Karma and this is exactly what we’re seeing as part of the discussion between Karna and Bhishmachaarya. Upon seeing Bhishmachaarya’s pitiable condition, Karna wonders why the effects of “Punya Karma” that Bhishmachaarya are not taking over prevent him from being in such a sad state of affairs. This is a very vague question that Karna is asking, as there is a huge philosophy behind how the “Karma Theory” works. We’ve seen that precisely in the previous episode and because there’s a time for everything, Bhishmachaarya’s time now is to perhaps experience the results of his accumulated “Paapa Karma” at the moment. Perhaps, he would pass through a time when he would experience all the fruits of the “Punya Karma” that he has performed during this current birth. But we would not be knowing it. Or, maybe perhaps, Bhishmachaarya might have already experienced the fruits of his “Punya Karma” in this birth itself – May Be with the luxurious life that he led at Hastinapura palace with all the possible comforts and respect that he had. So it is very difficult for us to conclude an answer to this question from Karna.
Now that Karna has asked this question, Bhishmachaarya has to give a reply, isn’t it? Hence Bhishmachaarya says to Karna thus, “Oh Karna! You may be right in your question, but this is not the time to talk about all that. Your first duty now is to go back and assist Duryodhana in all ways possible. Be with Duryodhana and finish off all your debts with him. Go to the battlefield and fight the war!” Upon this, Karna replies back thus, “Oh Bhishmachaarya! Yes! I’m going to the battlefield straightaway, but I understand one thing very clearly – This war is beginning to move towards the finishing stages. Till the tenth day, you were holding fort and was a stumbling block for the Paandavas to proceed further. However, now that you’re not available, I don’t think anyone else is as capable as you to hold fort and prevent the Paandavas from advancing. I know that the entire Karuava camp is going to be destroyed within a few days from now. I know that in this process I’m also going to die. However, I do not fear for my death. I’ll take it as it comes. I’m going to fight Arjuna on the battlefield shortly. However I know for a fact before the fight commences itself that I’m not going to win against him. It is only for a mere competition sake that I’m fighting Arjuna. Duryodhana’s destruction is confirmed towards the end of this war. I know it very well. However, it is just for the purpose of gratitude towards my friend, I’m wanting to be loyal to him!”
It is so sad to note here that Karna is going to fight this war, knowing the result beforehand! It is not only the case with Karna – Everyone in the Kaurava camp knows that they are going to face destruction. Still they fight the war just because of one person’s arrogance and attitude! Hence, as far as this war is concerned, the outcome has already been decided by Bhagawan Krishna and all that happens on the battlefield is a mere formality! So for today, let us understand up to this point and we shall continue this discussion forward in the next episode to witness the commencement of the proceedings of Day Eleven at Kurukshetra! Stay tuned!
